Showcasing current and breaking artists from across the country, Canadian Music Café presents a variety of musical genres to the industry leaders of film and TV. The annual event takes place at the Hard Rock Cafe during the Toronto International Film Festival, September 15th – 17th. Featuring 15 artists over three days, each act performs for 25 minutes to music supervisors/executives, producers, directors and media from around the world. Now in its fifth year, the Café has provided Canadian artists the opportunity to expose their talent to these key decision-makers, expanding future business opportunities and forming life-long relationships.

“The Canadian Music Café is amazing and allows for people like me, indie labels and management, to meet with supervisors they wouldn’t normally have the chance to. I want to keep attending for as long as possible,” said Caitlin Veitch, Six Shooter Records. Last year, Caitlin represented Royal Wood and will be returning this year with Hawksley Workman.

Jill Barber came out swinging with her song “Chances” licensed for Degrassi: The Next Generation and three additional songs licensed for The L Word. One supervisor recommended her to Chrysalis Music Publishing, who inked a deal with Jill this year. She also performed at the Canadian Consulate in Los Angeles for 30 music/film industry professionals in addition to Disney/ABC executives on their lot.

City and Colour, Thunderheist, Two Hours Traffic and Royal Wood also performed at the Café in 2008, each securing song placements in hit television shows. City and Colour’s “Sleeping Sickness” was given feature placement on Degrassi: The Next Generation and he showcased for 25 Disney/ABC executives last year. Thunderheist had songs placed in The L Word and Ugly Betty. Two Hours Traffic’s song “Jezebel” appeared in the TV show Castle, while another song was placed in The Best Years. Royal Wood’s “Mirror Without” was used in an episode of Grey’s Anatomy.

Following the Café, Kreesha Turner appeared on the hit television series Da Kink In My Hair, where two of her songs were licensed. The music supervisor for Ugly Betty also caught wind of Kreesha’s tracks, using two in the ABC series.

Final Flash secured a deal with L.A. publishing company NorthStar Media. Music supervisor Tony Von Pervieux was so impressed that he returned to L.A., making the introduction that led to the deal. The buzz from Final Flash’s showcase also helped them to secure a showcase at transmission, 2008.

Wild Roses placed two songs from Shuyler Jansen, after a Canadian supervisor saw him perform at the Café. The SONY TV music department in Los Angeles put Shuyler’s tunes on their pre-clear internal hard drive which all supervisors and editors can pull from.

Previous Café performers include Martha Wainwright, Jarvis Church, Molly Johnson, Matt Dusk, The Trews, Keisha Chante, Buck 65, Chantal Kreviazuk, Ron Sexsmith, Jully Black and Steven Page (Barenaked Ladies & The Vanity Project), amongst others. In the past four years, the Canadian Music Café has created a stage for 60 musical acts, presenting all genres of music to the decision-makers of the international film community.

This year’s performances at the 5th annual Canadian Music Café will include Amy Millan, Arkells, The Duhks, Emma-Lee, Hawksley Workman, Jason Bajada, The Mountains and the Trees, Ruby Jean and the Thoughtful Bees, Saukrates, Spiral Beach, Stef Lang, Terri Clark, USS and Winter Gloves. These artists will have the opportunity to showcase their unique sounds to American and Canadian music supervisors and film industry delegates at the 34th Toronto International Film Festival. Live performances run daily at the Hard Rock Cafe, 279 Yonge Street, September 15th – 17th, between 1-5 p.m.

“Once again, we are thrilled at the breadth and depth of Canadian talent that applied to the Café, demonstrating the excitement that Canadian artists have for this event,” said Michael Perlmutter, café coordinator, Canadian Music Café. “We have confirmed 12 music supervisors from the U.S. – the most in the Café’s five-year history.” The attendees will be treated to live performances from a variety of music genres, including rock, pop, dance, hip-hop, country and jazz.

The Café showcases Canada’s vibrant music scene to music supervisors/executives, producers, directors and media from around the world. As the result of international exposure, leading Canadian music companies receive nearly half of their revenues from foreign sources, according to reports from Canadian government sources.

“The Café has provided a platform for over 60 Canadian artists to date,” said Duncan McKie, president and CEO, CIRPA. “We salute this initiative and are pleased to facilitate the dialogue where film and music meet.”

Canadian Music Café and the
33rd Toronto International Film Festival®
Brings Back Reel Music That Shoots and Scores
September 9 – 11, 2008
September 9th – 10th, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
September 11th, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.

The mandate of the Canadian Music Café is to showcase Canada’s vibrant music scene to film and television industry leaders from around the world. In doing so, The Café is now the crossroad where respected and influential taste- and decision-makers can network with Canadian songwriters, managers and labels to collaborate on the music/movie synthesis.

Artists, their managers and labels who have showcased at the Café have gone on to see international distribution deals, North American commercial placements, have been featured in blockbuster and indie films, won Juno’s, ADISQ’s and countless other awards. Some of artists that have showcased at The Canadian Music Café include Buck 65, Ron Sexsmith, Chantal Kreviazuk, Jorane, Sarah Slean, K’naan, Jully Black, Molly Johnson, DJ Champion, Kid Koala, The Trews, Stabilo, The Russian Futurists, Keshia Chante, Mobile, Tomi Swick, and The Road Hammers.

“The success of the Canadian music industry depends on its ability to export the products of its abundant talent outside of Canada. Nothing speaks to this more than the recent success of Canadian musical artists in North America and in other offshore markets,” said Duncan McKie, President and Executive Director, CIRPA. “Whether for use in film or as standalone recordings, Canadian music is one of the singular successes as a cultural export. The Canadian Music Café makes such success possible by bringing together our best talent with foreign buyers who are anxious to use Canadian talent in their productions. It is vital that we continue to support these and other initiatives that bring Canadians face to face with this market.”

Brings Back Reel Music That Shoots and Scores
Hard Rock Cafe, 279 Yonge St.

September 9 – 11, 2008
September 9th – 10th, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
September 11th, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.

The Canadian Music Café showcases current and breaking artists from Vancouver to Halifax, encompassing many genres, from rock, pop, dance and R&B to jazz, country and singer-songwriter. Each act performs for 25 minutes at the Hard Rock Cafe, September 9th – 11th. Since its inception, long-term relationships have been made and the Canadian perspective is showcased through music to film and TV industry leaders. The Café has been a meeting ground for Canadian artists to expose their talent and expand their audience that has led to future business.

“Performing at the Canadian Music Café as part of the Toronto International Film Festival is a great opportunity for any band or musician to showcase their music to an audience of music supervisors from around the world. It’s an opportunity for Canadian music to be heard at a truly international event held in Toronto each September, and for Hunter Valentine, performing at the Canadian Music Café last fall has led to international showcase opportunities in London and New York City.”

- Graham Stairs, Finkelstein Management

As Molly Johnson was performing her third and final song at the 2006 Café, an American music supervisor left her performance to make a phone call to place her song during the closing credits of You Kill Me. The noir comedy starred Ben Kingsley and Téa Leoni and opened wide across North America in July 2007.

Las Angeles Music Supervisor John Bissell said, “Seeing DJ Champion was the highlight of his experience in Toronto!” Since DJ Champion took The Café stage in 2006, Champion has licensed songs to several films, TV shows and advertisements. Highlights include: TELUS and JC Penny advertisements and the feature film “Walk All Over Me”.

Both Lily Frost and Oh Susanna performed at the Canadian Music Café in 2007. It gave them the chance to expose themselves to music supervisors and producers to create life-long contacts. Frost’s songs were licensed to “MTV The Hills”, “Robson Arms” and “True Confessions of a Hollywood Scarlet”. Oh Susanna’s song Tangled and Wild was placed in “What Happened to Tully”, “Luckytown” and “Love From Ground Zero”. Sarah Harmer’s cover of Oh Susanna’s song Home Soon was licensed to the TV show “What About Brian”.

September 9th – 10th, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m.
September 11th, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m.

“I heard some great music at The Café last year and I am looking forward to hearing more this year. In addition to being introduced to innovative artists that I hadn’t heard before it was a real pleasure to meet a lot of the people in the Canadian music community. Nice folks.”

Gary Calamar, Music Supervisor

“Six Feet Under”, “Weeds”, “Dexter”

The Canadian Music Café showcases Canada’s vibrant music scene to film and television industry leaders from around the world. In its fourth year, The Café returns with the 33rd Toronto International Film Festival. Since its inception in 2005, The Café has become the place where film meets music, providing a platform for over 45 Canadian artists to date. Live performances run daily at this year’s new venue, the Hard Rock Cafe, 279 Yonge Street – Toronto, September 9th – 10th, 1:00 – 5:00 p.m., September 11th, 1:30 – 5:30 p.m. exclusively for Toronto International Film Festival delegates.

“We’re thrilled for the return of the Canadian Music Café,” said maxine bailey, Vice-President, Public Affairs, Toronto International Film Festival. “These two artistic media, music and film, have the power to communicate ideas in fresh and interesting ways. We eagerly await the opportunity to experience the connection shared by these creative forms at TIFF 2008.”

New Café Coordinator, Michael Perlmutter, brings his impressive background and expertise as a music supervisor of such films and television shows as “High Life”, “Childstar”, “Queer as Folk” and “Degrassi: The Next Generation”. “As a passionate music fan and music supervisor, I have witnessed The Café become a destination for music supervisors and the film and music industries at this world-class film festival,” says Perlmutter. “We’re looking forward to this year’s event!”

Past performers to grace The Café stage include Steven Page (of Barenaked Ladies), Ron Sexsmith, Chantal Kreviazuk, Oh Susanna, K’naan, DJ Champion, The Trews, Sarah Slean, Tomi Swick, Mobile, The Road Hammers, Molly Johnson, Buck 65, Stabilo, Great Lake Swimmers and United Steel Workers of Montreal.

“Since its inception, EMI Music Canada has found great excitement and value in the Canadian Music Café. EMI Music Canada, a member of Café partner organization, CRIA, recognizes the natural synergies between music and film. This opportunity to showcase our artists and, in turn, develop business in the form of syncs and licensing has been a benefit for us over the years. It is a wonderful event and a unique experience within the Toronto International Film Festival.”
